STATE OF THE WAREHOUSING INDUSTRY REPORT

The July, 1998 issue of Warehousing Management declares Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be the least expensive city in which to operate a distribution center in its "State of the Industry" report.  Sioux Falls recorded the nationwide low with an $11.8 million average annual warehouse-operating cost.

According to John Boyd, economist for The Boyd Co., Inc., companies are looking at the middle of the country for warehouses and distribution centers because transportation costs can be minimized.   There is also a trend toward location distribution centers in smaller cities due to lower operating cost structure, a more positive labor relationship, and less-expensive land.
